What Happens to a Factory Sealed Ledger After Years in Storage

Short answer: yes, it still works. A drained battery isn’t damage, and outdated firmware isn’t a defect - both are expected after years sealed, and both resolve the first time you connect the device to Ledger Live. Not every model even has a battery to worry about. But before any of that: most people buying a sealed collector edition are buying the sealed object first, and a working wallet second, if at all.

The collectible comes first

Every listing in our Ledger Collection is sold sealed, and most buyers keep it that way - the value is in the untouched box, the specific edition, the story behind it. Whether the device inside would power on today isn’t really the point for a collector buying a piece for what it represents.

That said, it’s a fair question, and a common enough hesitation that it’s worth answering directly instead of leaving it vague: if you did decide to open one and use it, here’s exactly what years of sealed storage does and doesn’t change.

Battery: only relevant for some models

Not every Ledger has a battery. The Nano S and Nano S Plus are USB-powered only - no internal battery, so there’s nothing to drain regardless of how long one sits sealed. The Nano X is the exception: it has a rechargeable battery, because Bluetooth pairing with a phone needs power that isn’t coming through a cable.

If a Nano X has been sealed for a few years, that battery will be completely drained. That’s not damage - it’s just what happens to any rechargeable battery left unused for a long time. Our own listings say this plainly rather than skip past it. From the OnChainMonkey Edition, sealed since 2022: “the battery has been uncharged since 2022… normal considerations for any sealed device stored this long - not defects.” Plug it into USB and it charges like any other rechargeable device - there’s no special reconditioning step.

Firmware: always outdated, always fixable in one step

Firmware is different from the battery question - it applies to every model, sealed or not, and it’s always going to be behind after any real stretch of time, because Ledger ships updates continuously. That’s expected, not a sign anything’s wrong with the specific unit you bought.

Ledger Live checks the installed firmware version the moment you connect a device and walks you through updating to the current version before you do anything else - the same authenticity and setup process described in how to verify a factory sealed Ledger wallet. An old firmware version sitting sealed in a box isn’t a security exposure; it becomes current before the device is ever used for anything real.

What years of sitting sealed doesn’t do

The secure element - the actual chip that protects your keys - is solid-state hardware. It doesn’t have an expiration date the way a battery does. Sitting sealed in normal indoor conditions doesn’t wear it down or degrade it the way years of use would. The two things that actually change in storage are the two covered above: a battery drains if there is one, and software falls behind. Neither touches the hardware itself.

If you do decide to use it

Setup looks the same regardless of how long the device sat sealed. Connect it to Ledger Live over USB, let it walk through the genuine-device check covered in our verification guide, install any pending firmware update, and generate a new recovery phrase.

That last part matters: a sealed device from any of these editions is factory-blank, not a wallet someone already used. There’s no existing balance, no prior recovery phrase, nothing to import - you’re setting one up from zero, exactly like a brand-new device bought yesterday, just in different packaging.

Real examples, not hypotheticals

This isn’t theoretical - several editions in the collection have been sealed for years and are sold with that fact stated plainly. The Ledger Nano X To The Moon Limited Edition has been sealed since 2019, with battery and firmware notes listed on its page. The Genesis Block Edition dates to the same year and carries a firmware note on its own page - the same outcome you’d expect from any device sealed this long.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Ledger models have a battery that can drain in storage?

No. Only the Nano X has a battery, because it supports Bluetooth. The Nano S and Nano S Plus run entirely off USB power, so there’s no battery to drain no matter how long one sits sealed.

Is outdated firmware a security risk while a device sits sealed and unused?

No. Firmware only matters once a device is actually being used to approve transactions. Ledger Live updates it to the current version as part of setup, before you’d ever use it for anything real - a sealed device sitting in a box isn’t exposed to anything firmware would protect against in the first place.

Will a fully drained battery need special handling to recharge?

No. It behaves like any other rechargeable battery that’s been unused for a while - plug the device into USB power and it charges normally. There’s no reconditioning process or risk of permanent damage from having sat uncharged.
